Guided Multi Day Walk - Kiwi Bird Spotting

Length: 10 - 30 Kms.
This guided walk is into the heart of native Kiwi bird country.
In Northland we are lucky to have a reasonable population of Kiwi's living in our native bush. As a species the Kiwi's are endangered and susceptible to predation by a number of introduced animals.
We have one of only two "mainland islands" in New Zealand just 7 Kms away from the Kaihu Farm Accomodation. Night walks through the area offers the opportunity to see the Kiwi in its native habitat.
To get off the beaten track to observe unbanded Kiwis requires at least one overnight camp deep in the forest. Once in the forest other native birds are also seen. These include Morepork, Korako (another endangered species), yellow heads, parakeets, forest Keas, and lots of others. The morning chorus will be loud enough to wake you, but you will retain the smile on your face all day.
What to bring.
Plenty of film or batteries for the camera. Good walking shoes. Warm clothes and rain protection. Insect repellent.
Fitness level.
The walk will take at least two full days (6 - 10 hours) dependent upon the weather. Camping equipment and food will need to be carried. The New Zealand bush gets cold at night, even in the summer, so bring warm clothes that will dry quickly.
You will be supplied with a lightweight pack and overnight safety equipment (Including rations) just in case we get caught out. Approx weight is 3 Kgs with plenty of room for food and your own stuff.
In addition your guide will carry GPS, ELB and a mobile phone for emergencies.
You will be transported to and from the Kiwi Bird Spotting walk from your accomodation at Kaihu Farm.
Cost: NZ$895.00 per person - Two day walk & overnight camp.
This includes 2 nights accomodation, all meals, transport to and from the walk, a local guide and a souvenir package.
