Guided Short Walk

Kai Iwi Lakes

View across Kai Iwi Lakes

Kai Iwi Lakes

Length: 8 Kms.

This guided walk is around the famed Kai Iwi Lakes and down to the longest beach in New Zealand.

The Kai Iwi Lakes consist of 3 natural freshwater lakes formed in sand. They are very clear and well stocked with trout. You are able to fish here all year.

The beaches are clean golden sand and you can swim in the lakes at anytime of the year. The lakes are shallow around the edges falling away to very deep water at the centre. One of the smaller lakes is set aside for water skiing and boating.

During the holiday period the camping ground next to the lake is very popular.

What to bring.
Plenty of film or batteries for the camera. Casual or walking shoes. Swimming togs and towel. Warm clothes and rain protection during the winter.

Geocaches
There are several geocaches around the Kai Iwi Lakes, so if you have a GPS then bring it along and you may be able to add a couple more caches to your tally.

Fitness level.
The walk will take a full day (5 - 6 hours) dependent upon the weather. The area is reasonably flat and the walk is not too strenuous.

You will be supplied with a lightweight pack and overnight safety equipment (Including rations) just in case we get caught out. Approx weight is 3 Kgs with plenty of room for food and your own stuff.

In addition your guide will carry GPS, ELB and a mobile phone for emergencies.

You will be transported to and from the Kai Iwi walk from your accomodation at Kaihu Farm.
